Requirements for Internship Recognition

For a full overview of the conditions for acquiring recognition of internships in the program of study "Business Administration and Engineering - Mechanical Engineering", please refer to the Guidelines for Internships (Appendix 3 of the Examination Regulations ("Prüfungsordnung")). These can be found in the download section below.

For the "Mechanical Engineering" specialization, the following internship requirements apply:

Type of Internship:

The internship during the program of study is composed of a technical and a business administration part. The total length of the business administration internship is 8-10 weeks. You must have worked in at least two different departments of a company for at least 2 weeks each. Please also note that the firm where the internship is to take place must have been authorized to train people by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) or the German Chamber of Tax Consultants (Steuerberaterkammer).

Internships in university institutes and affiliated institutes, part-time jobs. student assistant jobs, jobs in a student's own firm, or jobs in a firm belonging to a family relative of a student will not be recognized.

Students will find a selection of available internships here. However, we recommend that students consult other sources in addition.

Important notice: Please note that you must make up for all absences which may have accumulated during the period of time required for an internship to qualify for recognition. This does not apply for public holidays.

Following recognition of the business administration part of your internship, your report will - with the corresponding endorsement of recognition - be forwarded internally to the Internship Office of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (Mr. Köpke), where the recognition of the internship as a whole will be certified.

Documents to be Submitted

You must submit all the relevant documents within the 6 months directly following the end of the internship. In order to process your applications as quickly as possible, we must have the following documents.

  1. Application for recognition: (School of Business and Economics)
Please submit the application form for recognition together with the relevant documents.
For the recognition of an internship or of a vocational traineeship, you will find the relevant forms below.
  2. Registration with the Virtual Internship Office (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering)
  3. Internship confirmation/certificate
Please show the original to us. If you would like to take the original back with you, you can attach a copy of your certificate to your report.
The certificate must show the following information:
    • Length of time spent in the various departments and the work involved
    • Number of days absent (holiday, leave, illness, etc.).
  4. Internship report - Please ensure that your supervisor has signed the report and used the company stamp on the last page,

Style and Content of the Internship Report

The internship report should, of course, focus primarily on describing the activities of the intern during the internship. However, a brief description of the firm in which the internship is being conducted should also be included in the report. We expect our students to produce about one DIN A4 sheet of paper for each week of the internship, which means that for a 10-week internship, the report will be 10 pages long. Please note that graphics are not a substitute for text and that appendices, the title page, or the table of contents do not count towards the number of pages.

Important: Please ensure that you do not produce a report in the form of a week-by-week account. We expect your report to be clearly structured and broken down into the different areas of the firm that you worked in and the actual work that you did there.

Moreover, the following structural elements should be generally adhered to:

  • Title page
  • Table of contents
  • Possibly a confidentiality clause
  • Text
  • Appendices
  • Acknowledgement of the firm (official stamp, date, signature).

Please submit your documents in a standard spring-binder and please note the following formatting requirements:

Font: Times New Roman
Font Size: 12
Line Spacing: 1.5
Margins: left, right, top, and bottom 2.5 cm each

Recognition of a Vocational Traineeship

On an individual case basis, the Internship Office may recognize a vocational traineeship as a substitute for an internship. Please contact us directly if you have any questions pertaining to the recognition of your vocational traineeship. Otherwise, the recognition procedure is basically the same as having a business administration internship recognized. Please be aware that you will need to submit a new report that corresponds to the requirements placed on an internship report. You will also need to submit the application for recognition of the traineeship as well as the traineeship certificate.
